Charting Your Thoughts by Addison Bevere

You start with one search, one question you need answered, one insecurity or fear you just need to put to rest. But an hour later, you're tabs deep, still scrolling, still reading, still watching.

That one small anxious thought about a person, a problem, a decision is becoming a stronghold in your mind-a belief now shaping your emotions, your attention, your decisions.

In 2 Corinthians 10:4-5, Paul writes, "The weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but have divine power to destroy strongholds." He goes on: "We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ."

This passage is usually taught through the lens of what's happening "out there." Today, I want to look at it through the lens of what happens within us: the battles in our own mind.

The Greek word for "lofty" was an astronomer's term. It describes the exalted position of a star, charted and fixed against the sky. Paul is picking a word that means something's been mapped, measured, reinforced, and given a fixed place in our mind. A stronghold isn't a stray thought. It's a thought I've charted and defended, built a whole constellation around, decided is true, and now everything else has to conform to it.

Social media has to be the seedbed of today's strongholds. We're letting it chart our thoughts hours a day. Later in this passage, Paul writes that "when people measure themselves by one another, they are without understanding" (v. 12). They lose a sense of what is real.

But here's the good news: Paul also says we have divine power to destroy strongholds (v.4). We tune our hearts to the Spirit and the power of Scripture, taking lofty thoughts captive by practicing obedience-submitting whatever's happening within us to the Spirit's gentle, steady hand.

So next time you feel the spiral start, take a step back. Ask: who or what is charting my course?

Let's pray:

Father, may the weapons of warfare that You've given to me by Your Spirit tear down anything in my mind that stands against the knowledge of You. Give me the grace to take every thought captive, to reject vain imaginations, and to overcome what is beyond me. Let Your Word and Your whisper outrake every lie I've charted in my mind. It's in Jesus' name that we pray. Amen.
